Itinerary

• 1st stop

  Porta Marina

  Our visit starts at Porta Marina, the old sea gate of Pompeii, where the city once met the coast. We walk through it and picture streets busy with traders, carts, and families going about their day. This is where our young guests begin to build their own idea of the city, before the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD changed everything.

• 2nd stop

  The Forum

  We step into the Forum, the main square where Romans met, traded, and took part in public life. Standing in the middle, we look for the buildings that framed daily business and imagine voices bargaining in the open air. A simple challenge keeps children looking: columns, altars, and the marks that two thousand years of use left behind.

• 3rd stop

  The Temple of Jupiter

  At the Temple of Jupiter we meet the gods of ancient Rome and discover what people asked of them. The temple stood at the highest point of the Forum, and from here Mount Vesuvius rises on the horizon, a reminder of the eruption that buried the city. Children enjoy finding the altars and imagining a ceremony in progress.

• 4th stop

  The Forum Baths

  The Forum Baths show how much the Romans cared about comfort. We visit the rooms where they washed, relaxed, and talked business, and we ask a question children love: how did they heat water and floors without electricity? The answer is under our feet, in the channels and hollow bricks that carried hot air through the building.

• 5th stop

  A Roman Domus

  We enter a Roman domus, a townhouse open to visitors, and look for traces of the family who lived there: painted walls, mosaic floors, and small rooms around a central courtyard. Children can hunt for animals, plants, and characters painted on the plaster, and guess which part of the house was kept for guests.

• 6th stop

  A Thermopolium

  A thermopolium is the ancient version of a street food counter, and the benches that once held jars of ready meals are still there. We look at the storage vessels and imagine a quick lunch in the middle of a busy working day. It is one of the stops children remember best, because it feels so familiar.

• 7th stop

  Streets and Raised Crossings

  Walking the streets, we look for the grooves that cart wheels cut into the stone and the raised stepping stones that let people cross without stepping into the water that ran along the road. Children can measure the gaps with their hands and work out how a cart could pass, which turns a simple street into a puzzle.

• 8th stop

  The Large Theatre

  We finish at the Large Theatre of Pompeii, where stone tiers once held thousands of spectators. Standing on the steps, we imagine actors, musicians, and applause from two thousand years ago, and we test how far a voice carries from the stage. It is a natural place to close our visit with one last game.
