Our visit starts outside, at the glass pyramid that I. M. Pei placed in the main courtyard in 1989. It is worth a moment before we go in: the structure is built from hundreds of glass panes and metal bars, and it has become the modern symbol of a palace four centuries older. From here we walk down into the entrance hall and begin the route.

Tour Details
Full Description
The Louvre holds eight centuries of history inside one building, and our private visit follows that story from the medieval fortress hidden in its foundations to the royal palace and then the public museum it is today. An expert local guide leads the way, so we set the pace, ask questions, and give the works the time they deserve.
We begin at the glass pyramid of I. M. Pei, the modern entrance that now stands in the courtyard of a much older palace, and then go down into the medieval Louvre, where the fortress walls, towers, and dry moat survive beneath the floors. The contrast sets the tone for the whole visit: one site that has been a stronghold, a royal residence, and a museum.
The ancient galleries open next. We stop at the Great Sphinx of Tanis, a granite creature with a lion's body and a human head, then move to Greek sculpture: the Venus de Milo without her arms, and the Winged Victory of Samothrace, a goddess landing on the prow of a ship with the wind carved into her drapery.
In the Galerie d'Apollon, gold, mirrors, and the French crown jewels show how the court displayed its power, and a few rooms later we reach Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa. We look at the smile, the missing eyebrows, and the landscape behind her, and we separate what is documented from what remains a matter of debate.
The visit closes in front of The Wedding at Cana, Veronese's enormous banquet painted for a Venetian monastery, where the detail rewards a long look. Entrance tickets and entrance fees are included, our tours run privately with a flexible duration of two to five hours, and we confirm the meeting point after booking. Hotel, airport, or train station pickup can be arranged on request at an extra cost. The tour is available in English, Italian, Spanish, French, and German.
